24K Service Project

24K Service Project: Integrating Service into Education

At the start of 2023, Mr. B introduced a unique experiment by incorporating service into his class curriculum, creating an in-class economy based on a token system. This initiative offered students opportunities to take on leadership roles within the class hierarchy, such as leading groups, managing chess games, and conducting tea ceremonies. Students also tutored peers in phonics and mentored Ms. Tor’s kindergarten class. As students embraced their responsibilities, they began creating lessons, providing individualized instruction, and modeling exemplary behavior for their mentees. Under Master Teacher Tor’s guidance, the experiment evolved to include a literacy and physical fitness program designed by the 4th graders.

Goals of the 24K Service Project

The 24K Service Project (2 x 4th + Kinder) aims to build on this success by integrating all contributing classes into an independent student learning community within the larger educational framework. The project will operate as follows:

  • Mr. B’s GATE class will collaborate with Mr. Light’s at-risk class to develop curriculum for Ms. Tor’s gifted kindergarten class.

  • Through this process, students will learn to become better students by acting as teachers, master phonics issues, and develop mentorships within a community of peers.

Expanding the Program

The program will expand to other areas as needed, including physical fitness and games such as chess and Shobu. Success will depend on the flexibility of the system, support or non-involvement by various levels of administration, and the maturity of incoming students.

By fostering a culture of service, the 24K Service Project aims to create a dynamic learning environment where students gain valuable teaching and leadership skills while contributing to their community. In fact, The 24K Service Project has the potential for the students to create their own self-sustaining learning ecosystem with minimal interference from adults serving as a new model of a school within a school.
