Day of Silence

Day of Silence (DOS): Revolutionizing Communication in Education

The Day of Silence (DOS) is an innovative experiment launched during the 2023-2024 school year. On this designated day, students and participating teachers, including notable educators like Catie Sadlier, Larry Light, and Professor Mango, engaged in a full day of non-verbal interaction in Mr. B’s homeroom, including during recess and lunch periods. Participants wore a band-aid on their throat to signify their involvement and were permitted to use American Sign Language (ASL), writing, and, if necessary, breaking the silence.

Objectives of the DOS Program

The primary goals of the DOS program are to:

  1. Foster a deeper appreciation for both verbal and non-verbal communication.

  2. Provide ample time for uninterrupted self-reflection.

  3. Challenge and explore traditional teaching methodologies.

Future of the DOS Experiment

The DOS experiment will continue to gather and analyze data as a class to understand the impact of silence in education. This ongoing research aims to uncover significant insights into the role of silence in enhancing learning and communication within the educational environment.
