Icons of Immigration: Tools for Understanding Migration Dynamics

The Icons of Immigration serve as essential graphic organizers and analytical tools designed to deepen understanding of communities in flux. Developed through collaboration with Professor Mango from Cal State San Bernardino as part of the Al Najm Project, these icons initially facilitated student interviews with immigrant families. Over time, their application has expanded to encompass literature, history, and broader societal contexts, such as exploring themes like predator-prey dynamics in bullying or ecological food webs.

Structured in complementary pairs akin to Yin and Yang, the icons provoke classroom debates that delve into the intricate challenges faced by migrating communities. Recommended readings that synergize effectively with these icons include Refugee by Alan Gatz, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, Watership Down by Richard Adams, and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
