Quotationals Quote Bee
The Quotationals Quote Bee: Inspiring Student Achievement
The Quotationals Quote Bee was an annual competition where students memorized over 700 hand-selected quotes to recite verbatim, vying for a cash prize. Additionally, student-created quotes are selected for the Submit-A-Quote winners, who receive the honor of having their words of wisdom added to the Quote Bee bank of quotations and included in future Quote Club Socratic discussions.
The Quote Bee was an intense competition, as you can see in the accompanying videos, but it also served as a rite of passage for students. They overcame fear, the workload of rote memorization, and often, failure. With determination and the support of their peers and families, students transformed through the experience, emerging as more resilient and confident individuals.

(Above) RJ and Manny tied for first place after exhausting all the quotes for the evening. RJ, who later became a San Bernardino teacher, memorized each quote along with its page number in the book. Manny, on the other hand, memorized the quotes by discussing each one with his father. These two approaches demonstrate the diverse methods students use for rote memorization of often complicated language.
(Left) The backstage area primarily served as a post-event interview space and “Crying Room.” When students undertake such a demanding and exhausting task over the course of a year, emotions are often released. This natural process helps students process the event and mature. Most of the Quote Bee volunteers provided support for these students and their families, helping them recognize and celebrate their personal growth.
