Survival Day
Survival Day: Learning Resilience from Real-Life Challenges
In 2023, a severe snowstorm hit Mr. B’s neighborhood, leaving multiple feet of snow and trapping mountain residents in their homes for two week. Movement was nearly impossible, and contrary to media reports, government assistance was absent until the storm's end. Many animals perished, and residents had to rely on each other for survival. Neighbors, even those who previously had conflicts, came together to feed abandoned animals, clear roads, and share food and supplies.
The Lesson of Vulnerability and Humanity: Survival Day
Inspired by these events, Survival Day was created to teach the importance of community and preparedness. The program is divided into three parts:
Supply Caches: Developing caches of essential supplies.
Disaster Preparedness: Preparing families for various disaster scenarios, including natural disasters, civil unrest, unemployment, and solar storms affecting the power grid.
Survival Day: The culminating event where students, working in teams, tackle physical challenges and apply their preparedness skills working as a collective unit.
The first Survival Day involved only participating classes, but the goal is to expand the event to include families and the wider community, fostering a culture of resilience and cooperation.
